Build Fast, Build Responsibly: Navigating the EU AI Act as a Builder

About this session

Every AI builder today faces the same tension of moving fast enough to stay competitive, while slowing down enough to stay compliant. The EU AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law, turns that tension into a real deadline. Most organisations operating in the EU or building AI systems that affect EU residents must meet key requirements by August 2026. This talk explores what that deadline actually means for founders, engineers and product teams shipping AI features every day. From high-risk AI systems used in areas like biometrics, employment, to AI used in research, education, and law enforcement, they must have quality management systems, risk assessments, technical documentation, and formal registration in place. At the same time, transparency rules kick in: chatbots must disclose they are AI, deepfakes and generated texts need visible watermarks, and systems that read emotions or classify biometric data must tell users what’s happening. Builders who ignore these rules don’t just risk fines they risk being locked out of the EU market entirely.

Key takeaways

  • 1. Help attendees understand the regulatory landscape by identifying the key provisions of the EU AI Act taking effect, their implementation timeline, and the categories of organisations and systems to which they apply.
  • 2. Apply a risk-assessment framework by conducting a systematic inventory of AI systems and classify them according to the Act’s risk tiers to identify compliance gaps.
  • 3. Help attendees evaluate strategies for embedding regulatory requirements into the AI development lifecycle, rather than treating them as a post-hoc addition.
