A cross-functional steering body that standardizes AI tooling, training, evaluation, and governance across business units. By 2026, the CoE is the dominant oper
An AI Center of Excellence (CoE) is a central team chartered to accelerate and de-risk AI across the organization: setting standards and governance, providing shared platforms and reusable assets, enabling business-unit teams, and incubating high-value use cases. Mature CoEs run hub-and-spoke, central enablement, federated delivery, and sunset gatekeeping as units gain capability.
Without a CoE, enterprises repeat mistakes in parallel: duplicated vendor deals, inconsistent governance, pilots that never share learning. The CoE converts scattered enthusiasm into compounding capability, and in regulated industries it's where audit-ready AI practice actually gets built.
No: centralized delivery becomes a bottleneck. The winning pattern is hub-and-spoke: the CoE owns platform, standards, and enablement while business units deliver use cases with CoE support.
Senior enough to move budgets and standards: commonly the CAIO/CDAIO, CIO, or transformation office. Burying it in one business unit guarantees parochial priorities.
Time-to-production for new use cases, reuse rates of shared assets, portfolio ROI, governance coverage, and capability spread (how many teams ship safely without hand-holding). Activity metrics alone signal theater.
